STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT:

The three wise men who came from the East to pay homage to the infant Jesus brought Him rich gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh as part of their worship.  What gifts have I brought to this celebration to offer to the newborn Savior?

SOCIETY OF ST. VINCENT DePAUL FOOD PANTRY: The next food pantry opening is Tuesday, January 6, 2009.

Legend tells us that the Magi left the comfort of their palaces after years of study to trek over mountains and deserts in their search for the newborn King.  Vincentians learn from their example that we must watch and wait, and when the time is right, we must put our faith into action, leave our comfortable surroundings, and go forth to seek out the poor and humble in their homes.

Bishop Tobin

A LETTER FROM BISHOP TOBIN in gratitude for our Thanksgiving Day collection which was donated to the ‘Keep the Heat On’ campaign:

Dear Fr. Pescatello & Parishioners of Our Lady of Good Help;

I would like to personally thank you for your generous gift of $449.15 in support of the ‘Keep the Heat On’ campaign. Thanks to your gift and a grant provided by the Catholic Charity Fund, ‘Keep the Heat On’ will help a RI individual or family with no place left to turn for heating assistance.

‘Keep the Heat On’ has been a tremendous success since it was launched in 2005.  The campaign has provided more than $600,000 to those in need.  Thanks to generous donations and matching grants from the Catholic Charity Fund, more than 2,000 homes have received assistance through ‘Keep the Heat On’.

Recent economic challenges and fluctuating energy prices have forced many Rhode Islanders to turn to the Catholic Church in RI for heating and other forms of assistance.  Sadly, many still struggle to provide a warm home for their families.  Thanks to your kind support, a household that has exhausted all private and public forms of assistance will have a resource to ‘Keep the Heat On’ this winter.

If you are aware of someone in need of assistance, please visit the ‘Keep the Heat On’ website at www.heatri.com or call 401-421-7833 for additional information.  Regular updates on the campaign will be published in the Rhode Island Catholic and on www.thericatholic.com.

With gratitude for your kindness I will remember you in prayer.

God Bless, Thomas J. Tobin
Bishop of Providence

FOOD FOR THE POOR: Next weekend  a representative of Food For The Poor will speak at all the Masses.  The second largest international relief and development agency in our country, FFP does more than simply feed the millions of hungry poor in 16 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America.  Since 1982, FFP has provided clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and emergency, with more than 96% of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor. To make a donation, please visit their website at http://www.foodforthepoor.org. The Lord Jesus reminds us “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, you do unto me.”

JUST FOR TODAY RESOLUTIONS:

Just for today I will take a quiet half hour all by myself and God and I will give Him thanks for all the abundance that He has given to me.

Just for today I will strengthen my mind and will learn something useful.  I will not be a mental loafer and allow the television to fill my mind with drivel.  I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for today I will be unafraid.  I will especially be unafraid to be happy, to enjoy what is beautiful in my life, to love and believe that those I love really love me.

Just for today I will love those in my human family, those I work with, those I meet on the street and in the market, because they are all brothers and sisters created by God and loved by Him as much as I am loved by Him.

Just for today I will live as Jesus lives, with compassion and concern for all those around me.
